Semen Analysis

Men are not immediately infertile after a vasectomy. There can be sperm in the semen for many months (rarely up to 18 months). You must continue to use alternative contraception until you have at least one semen analysis showing no more live (motile) sperm.

You will be provided with a pathology request form for a semen analysis and this should be performed three months after your vasectomy.

Drop off the sample at the Dorevitch Pathology Reception at Latrobe Regional Hospital Traralgon is the most reliable option. Ask for directions at Latrobe Regional Hospital Main Reception. Check out the link below for instructions and for locations across Victoria.

Please DO NOT drop off samples at the Dorevitch Pathology collection centre at the West Gippsland Hospital. Samples left at this location with most likely result in the need to retest requiring you to then deliver another sample directly to Latrobe Regional Hospital Traralgon.

We either send a message via Hotdoc or telephone you with your result. Results are also available via the My Health Gov app on your smart device or My Health Record via MyGov with your desktop computer.

Please call the clinic if you have not been contacted after one week of doing your analysis.
